CLASSIC CLIMBS OF THE PYRENEES
About the Riding…
While the Alps capture the most attention, France’s other famed mountain range, the Pyrenees, rivals the Alps in equally epic climbs.
Consider recent Tours, where the race’s outcome was decided on the climbs of the Pyrenees, long before the race reached Paris. We’re taking you to those climbs, to launch an assualt of your dreams. Imagine climbing the Col du Marie Blanc, the Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden, the Peyresourde and Col d’Aubisque. Ride the classic ‘Col’s’ and have a coffee in the same cafe as cycling greats Indurain, LeMond and Merckx.
About the Local Food and Wine…
People of the Pyrenees consider themselves Occitan, an ancient group that inhabited this area dating back 6000 years. Yes, they speak French, and they’re quick to share their rich mountaneous lives with you. Fresh cheeses, meats and plenty of incredible produce are on the menu each evening. Wines from the region and even some local brew can be sampled.
About the Accommodations…
Location – comfort – style
Alysson Hotel: Oloron, France where Marty raced for a local club in 1990. See old video coverage
Tourmalet-Luz St.Sauveur: One of the simplest hotels we use, and yet, it always is a guest favorite. The hosts are warm & inviting, while providing you with everything you need. It has a feel of being in someone’s home, with the privacy of a hotel.
WHAT LEVEL RIDER DO I NEED TO BE?
You need to be fit & prepared for this trip as you’ll be riding in the mountains daily. We average 40-60 miles per day with longer days & shorter ride option on some days. Are trips are designed for lifestyle cyclists that may not win every race, but enjoy going the distance.
WHAT ABOUT THE CLIMATE?
We lead this trip in August because it provides the best riding weather. Temperatures are in the mid-80’s, the sunshine is plentiful and evenings are pleasantly cool. We do suggest arm/leg warmers for the ocassional cool mornings and always a wind jacket for the descents.
IS THIS A GOOD TRIP FOR A NON-RIDER?
If your companion rides only a small amount we offer shorter rides, but this is a mountainous area. There are swimming pools, small villages and plenty of hiking. If your companion is active there are also many more activities to enjoy while you ride.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME?
We’ve been riding in this area for over 25 years and little has changed. If you want to see classic Europe in an untouched form, this trip is for you. Marty Jemison has ridden over 250,000miles in Europe and this is his favorite mountain range. We provide 1 guide for every 4 guests so you can ride at the speed you desire.[box title=”Included” color=”#3373b8″]
